Developing a Stronger Prayer Life

Prayer is something that doesn’t come easily for everyone. I should know because it doesn’t come easy for me. In general, I don’t communicate very well with people at all, so it makes sense that I struggle to properly communicate with God. It would be tempting to shrug my shoulders and just say, “Well, that’s just the way I am,” but I’ve learned that I have to fight against that tendency and try harder to make my prayer life a strength in my walk with the Lord. In my efforts to deepen and strengthen my own prayer life, I’ve learned the secret to making a weak prayer life strong (though I still struggle with it all the time): pray more.

This solution is both infuriatingly simple and beautifully effective. The way to get better at something is just to do it more often. The more you talk to God, the better you will get at talking to God. It really is as simple as that! There are two ways I think we can do this.

First, set aside time every day to pray.

While I don’t really like the idea of “scheduling time for God,” the reality is that that is what will work for most people. If we set aside time that is solely for prayer, we are more likely to do it and make it a routine.

Second, pray in little times throughout the day.

Prayers done have to be long and eloquent. You don’t have to spend an hour in prayer. You can spend 3 minutes 10 times a day and still grow your prayer life into something strong and vital. If you’ve got a minute here or there throughout the day, check in with God. Share something from your heart. Ask Him questions. Carry on a constant conversation with Him and your prayer life will get stronger in no time!

There is no “secret” to strengthening your prayer life. The reality is that we all just need to do it more often. Simply spending more time talking with God will accomplish the very thing we want; to be able to comfortably talk to God. Make it a priority and do it often. That’s all it takes.
