Christians and Environmentalism

Whether you think it’s a conspiracy theory propagated by the government or it’s a real thing, the chic thing right now is climate change. In reality, the argument and idea of climate change has been around for decades, but for whatever reason it has made its way into political spheres recently and the push has been greater than ever for people to accept it and live their lives accordingly. But I digress. Whatever your stance on climate change, the reality is that our environment, our earth, matters, and we should take care of it. In many ways, Christians should be the ones out on the front lines leading the charge for environmentalism.

Now, don’t misunderstand what I mean when I say that. I’m not suggesting all Christians should become hippie tree huggers; far from it actually. I simply mean that we believe that God created this world that we live in, and we also believe that God said it was good. Then God created us in His image and gave us dominion over all of creation. Basically, that just means that God made us His “managers” here on earth to take care of His creation and rule over it. That truth alone should be enough to convince us that the earth is important and we should be treating it with respect. God made us His managers here on earth, and it would be poor stewardship for us to treat it like garbage and destroy it. We should be the ones shouting the loudest for the preservation of the environment and for taking care of the world God has given us.

There will come a time when God brings an end to this earth and replaces it with a new heaven and new earth at the end of time. Until then, though, we are here and we have been given dominion over this earth as God’s most special created beings. It would be foolish for us to trash the earth and not take the best care of it we can. So you don’t have to be a granola-loving hippie to be a faithful Christian, but it wouldn’t hurt to take a quick lesson from them and learn to love the earth God has made for us to live in!
