Where the Rubber Meets the Road

We’ve all heard the phrase, “where the rubber meets the road,” as a way of saying, “This is where things get serious.” It’s a colloquial way of saying that there’s a certain point where things really matter and everything up to that point was all talk. The same way of thinking can be applied to the Christian life as well. There comes a point where the rubber meets the road and we have to live out our faith for others to see it’s genuine.

I could just have easily titled this blog “walk the walk,” because that’s really what I’m getting at here. Talk is cheap and you can say anything you want, but your actions will prove whether those words are true. I can say I’m a Christian until I’m blue in the face, but if I live my life in a way that isn’t Christian, then people would be right to doubt my words. When the rubber meets the road, I have to live every single day in obedience to Christ and service to Him, to bring Him glory and honor. That is my real witness and my proof that I have given my life to Christ and have received forgiveness for my sins. Any words not backed up with action to prove them are empty and hollow.

I recently preached through the book of James, where this is made very clear. James would say that not only do your actions speak louder than your words, your actions prove whether your words are true or false. I agree with that. We must marry our words and actions together to bring God glory and expand His kingdom. Anything short of that is being unfaithful to the faith we claim. So reflect on your life and see if you’ve been really living for Christ when the rubber meets the road.
