The New Man
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” - 2 Corinthians 5.17 (NIV)
Few verses in Scripture capture the power of salvation as beautifully as 2 Corinthians 5.17. It speaks of total transformation. It’s not just about a change in behavior, but a change of identity. When we come to Christ we are not merely made into improved versions of ourselves, we become entirely new people from the inside out.
The phrase “in Christ” is the key of this verse. It means that through faith we are united with Jesus. His life, death, and resurrection now define us. To be “in Christ” is to live in a new spiritual reality where our sins are forgiven and we stand righteous before God (go check out Romans 8.1). It’s not about trying harder to be good. It’s about belonging to Jesus so fully that His Spirit begins reshaping us into His likeness.
Before Christ, we were controlled by sin. The “old man” was ruled by selfish desires and separated from God. When Paul says, “the old has gone,” he means that the person we once were (the one spiritually dead and bound by sin) no longer defines us. Our past mistakes, failures, and shame are nailed to the cross and erased. Even though the enemy loves to remind us of who we used to be, God calls us to remember who we are now in Him.
The moment we believe, God breathes new life into us. His Holy Spirit takes residence in our hearts, empowering us to live differently; to love, forgive, and walk in righteousness. This “new man” isn’t just about doing better, it’s about being renewed from the inside. We now have new desires, new priorities, and a new mission: to live for Christ instead of ourselves (check out 2 Corinthians 5.15). The transformation may be gradual, but it’s real. Day by day, the Spirit works to make us more like Jesus (go read Ephesians 4.22-24).
Living as a new creation means a few things. We can let go of the past because we are no longer defined by what we have done, but by what Christ has done for us. We walk by the Spirit, daily surrendering our thoughts, actions, and decisions to God’s guidance. We reflect Christ’s character by showing grace, truth, and love in every area of our lives. When we do these things, we truly become the “new man” that God has made us to be.
