Take It Easy!
We live in a culture that celebrates hustle and productivity so much that taking time off can almost feel weird and lazy. It can be easy to worry that slowing down will mean falling behind, but the truth is that taking a break isn’t a sign of weakness. Rest is actually a reflection of God’s design for our lives.
From the very beginning, rest has been part of creation. Genesis 2.2-3 says, “On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation” (NLT). God didn’t rest because He was tired, He rested to set a rhythm for His creation. When we take time off, we honor that rhythm and remind ourselves that we are more than what we produce.
Even Jesus withdrew from the crowds to pray and rest from time to time (check out Luke 5.16). If the Son of God needed quiet time away from work and ministry, how much more do you think we need it? Taking time off allows our souls to be renewed so we can return to work with joy, gratitude, and a clearer sense of purpose. Rest is not an interruption to serving God, it’s preparation for it.
For many, though, taking time off feels risky. What if we lose opportunities? What if people think we’re lazy? The reality is, though, rest is an act of faith. When we pause our work, we’re declaring that our security doesn’t come from our effort, but from God’s provision. Psalm 127.2 reminds us, “It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones” (NLT).
Don’t get me wrong, work is good. Work is a gift from God, but it was never meant to be our identity. Rest reminds us that our worth is not in our performance but in Christ’s finished work on the cross. Taking time off is a way of living out grace. We rest because He has already done the ultimate work for us.
Rest is not a luxury, it’s an act of obedience. When Christians take time off work, we proclaim that God is in control and that our value is found in Him alone. In a restless world, choosing to take it easy every now and then and rest can be a powerful testimony of trust. Who knows, your time off might even be the open door to sharing your faith with someone and leading them to faith in Christ! Take some encouragement from this final passage as you consider how you might plan some rest time and take it easy:
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest’” (NLT).
