Weekly Bible Verse: 2
I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4.13 (CSB)
This verse just might be the most misinterpreted verse in all of Scripture. In modern, western Christianity, we've collectively decided, for some reason, that this verse means Jesus gives us the strength to do whatever we put our minds to or whatever goals we set for ourselves. This is not only an incorrect interpretation, it's dangerous, because Paul was never talking about setting goals or achieving whatever we set our minds to when he penned these words. Paul was encouraging the church at Philippi that no matter what circumstances you find yourself in during this life, good or bad, wealthy or poor, hungry or well fed, you can do it all through the strength that Jesus Christ gives you.
So, the next time you see this verse, remember that it is meant as an encouragement that Christ's strength sustains us in all circumstances. Go ahead and make goals for yourself and work hard to achieve them, just don't look to this verse for validation that Jesus will get it done for you. That's not what it was ever supposed to mean.
